To calculate your official factory radio code, you need one crucial piece of information: the 14-character serial number starting with VWZ (Volkswagen), AUZ (Audi), or SKZ (Škoda). Here is how to locate it in under 10 minutes.
Tools Needed
- Plastic pry tool or trim removal wedge (avoid metal screwdrivers to prevent scratches).
- Torx T20 screwdriver (for securing screws).
- Radio release keys (only for older single-DIN units like Beta/Gamma).
Step 1: Pry the Outer Bezel Trim
Using your plastic pry tool, insert the tip under the bottom edge of the plastic bezel surrounding your stereo. Gently work around the perimeter until the spring clips release. Pull the bezel straight outward and unplug the hazard switch harness if necessary.
Step 2: Remove the 4 Torx T20 Screws
You will now see 4 Torx T20 screws holding the corners of the radio chassis to the dashboard frame. Unscrew all 4 and set them in a safe tray.
Step 3: Slide Out the Unit & Inspect the Label
Slide the radio forward about 4 to 6 inches. You do not even need to disconnect the rear Quadlock wiring harness! Look at the top and side casing for:
- The White Manufacturer Sticker: Look for a 14-digit serial formatted like
VWZ1Z2C1234567. - The Stamped Metal Casing: If the label is scuffed, look on the silver metal side panel where the same 14 characters are laser-stamped directly into the metal.
