If you enter an incorrect radio code twice in succession, your Volkswagen or Audi head unit will activate a security penalty lockout. The screen displays "SAFE" accompanied by a small numeral "2" in the corner, and the buttons stop responding to input. Do not worry—your radio is not permanently broken!
Why Does SAFE 2 Mode Happen?
The SAFE 2 system is designed to prevent thieves from running automated PIN-guessing devices. When two consecutive incorrect PIN attempts are registered, the internal micro-controller enters a mandatory 60-minute cooling timer.
The Official 60-Minute Reset Procedure
To clear SAFE 2 and bring back the code entry screen (displaying "1000"):
- Turn the car ignition switch to ACC (Accessories ON). The dashboard lights should illuminate.
- Turn the radio ON. The display must show "SAFE" or "SAFE 2".
- Leave both the car ignition and radio switched ON for exactly 60 continuous minutes without turning either off.
- Do not touch any buttons on the radio faceplate during this waiting hour.
What Happens After 60 Minutes?
Once the 60-minute timer finishes, the screen will automatically transition from "SAFE" back to "1000" (or display 4 blank dashes). You now have 2 fresh attempts to enter your authentic factory PIN.
