VW Radio Models Comparison: RCD300, RCD310, RCD510 & RNS Series Explained

Volkswagen has installed dozens of different infotainment head units across Golf, Passat, Polo, Tiguan, and Transporter models over the last two decades. Knowing which specific unit is installed in your dashboard makes finding the serial number and entering your unlock PIN effortless.

1. The RCD Series (Audio & CD Focused)

The RCD family was the backbone of Volkswagen vehicles manufactured between 2004 and 2015. Manufactured by Blaupunkt, Delphi, or Bosch:

RCD 300 / RCD 300 MP3

Standard in Golf Mk5 and Passat B6 models. Features a single-DIN layout within a double-DIN curved bezel, monochrome amber or blue backlit display, and 6 preset buttons numbered 1 through 6.

RCD 310

Recognizable by its crisp blue or white alphanumeric dot-matrix screen with dual rotary encoders. It supports MP3 CD playback, AUX input, and PDC (Optical Parking Display). Serial numbers start with VWZ1Z2 or VWZ4Z2.

RCD 510 (Touchscreen 6-CD Changer)

One of the most popular upgrades, the RCD 510 features a 6.5-inch color LCD touchscreen, internal 6-disc CD changer, and front-facing SD card slot. Manufactured primarily by Delphi and Bosch, serial formats generally start with VWZ4Z7 or VWZ1Z3.

Note on Manufacturers: Even identical-looking RCD510 units can be built by Delphi (Portugal) or Bosch (Germany). The serial number on the side sticker identifies the exact factory origin.

2. The RNS Series (Integrated Sat-Nav Systems)

The RNS family introduced integrated GPS navigation, voice control, and DVD playback:

RNS 310 & RNS 315

Compact 5-inch color navigation touchscreens. The RNS 315 includes built-in Bluetooth and internal flash memory for maps. Serial numbers commonly begin with VWZAZ2.

RNS 510 (Flagship HDD Navigation)

Volkswagen’s flagship navigation system with an internal 30GB–40GB hard drive, DVD video playback, and high-definition display. Built by Continental/VDO, serials usually begin with VWZ6Z7.

3. Where to Find the 14-Character Serial Number

On every single Volkswagen unit listed above, the serial number is located in two places:

  • White paper manufacturer label: Look for a printed barcode with a 14-character code starting with VWZ.
  • Metal casing stamp: Stamped directly into the steel casing on the side or top of the radio chassis. If the paper label is damaged or faded, read the stamped serial.
